Mitsubishi Montero/Sport R4A51/V4A51 Part 1

The R4A51 transmission is a fully electronically controlled rear-drive transmission used in twowheel- drive applications. The V4A51 is the four-wheel-drive version. These transmissions are used in 1999 to 2003 Mitsubishi Montero and Montero Sport SUVs behind the 3.0- or 3.5-liter SOHC engines. This transmission uses all clutches and no bands to attain the four forward speeds and reverse. These transmissions, from the start of production, have a low one-way clutch (sprag). The structure of this transmission allows for an easy transformation into a five-speed unit. In this first of a two-part Technical Supplement, Mitsubishi Montero/Sport R4A51/V4A51 basic assembly tips and internal-component identification will be the subject matter, beginning with information such as a clutch-application chart, hydraulic-pressure tests and some basic electrical items such as case-connector-terminal identification, resistance values and solenoid ID and continuing with assembly tips. The order of assembly begins from the rear of the transmission, eventually working our way toward the front and finally the valve body. Part 2 will contain further assembly tips as well as valve-body information and other items important to rebuild technicians.
